Winter in Haifa

9Jan19

Oh boy, winters here are lovely. It rains, the air gets cold and crisp but it doesn't freeze and it doesn't snow. Love it. The feral cats however don't like it so much. I feel bad enjoying the weather while the little guys are outside suffering.

Our guy, Charlie who used to be GG and has the official name of Zombie, stays inside and snuggles with me at night.

Often, when I open the door in the morning I'm greeted by the hoodlums. They're not at the point of coming inside -- yet. Well, Bandit, the gang leader does and seems all confused; but everyone else is a little too timid to come it. I hope to keep it that way.

Yesterday and the day before I noticed only three of Sausage's gang at the door. I wondered if Dum-dum, the runt of the litter had not made it through the cold rain. But then I went down to feed them, careful not to trip since Bandit in particular keeps getting underfoot.

Up comes Dum-dum and the rest of Loper's jellybeans. Apparently Dum-dum has been adopted by Loper. She fits in them better as Loper's kids are younger and a bit smaller. It is interesting how Loper has been willing to take her in. It is also interesting how Sausage weaned her kids and now acts like she doesn't even know them.

Yesterday Sausage came over for a sardine and a nap. She sleeps funny. She curls her back thigh up over her head. Anyway Charlie came in and they saw each other but no fighting broke out. I think everyone is too cold and wet to care. After their nap, Charlie wanted out but Sausage was also sitting by the door and he wouldn't go near her. I let out Sausage, calmed down Charlie and let him out a few seconds later. He really doesn't like all these cats in the neighborhood.

Breeding season will start soon and none of these cats are fixed so we'll probably have hundreds of cats hanging around here. I'm sort of worried about that -- I worry about everything.
