Kitten Capers

29Aug18

Yesterday we had way too much kitty drama. Every time David or I would come back from some type of excursion, Sausage followed up the stairs. In the mornings, I will give her a sardine, but she wants one every time she comes up. No can do.

In the afternoon, I heard Sausage in the stairwell, and opened the door to find she had drug up one of her kittens. I watched in amazement as she picked up the kitten by the nape of its neck with her mouth and got it up one more step and marched happily into the apartment and dropped the kitten by the couch. It ran behind the sofa and disappeared underneath. About this time I figured out what was going on.

Sausage couldn't decide if she wanted in or out. She kept meowing, so we put her out. Either she was giving her kitten to us for safekeeping, or planned on bringing the others up and moving in. In the meantime, we couldn't find the kitten, but occasionally heard a mew, mew. We went and bought enough kitten food to keep it alive until we could return it and give it back to the mom.

When I returned with the kitten food and there was Sausage curled up next to our door with another kitten. Oh boy. Well, Fluffy and GG had followed me up and the kitten and Sausage both hissed at GG and Fluff. For a few minutes there was a kitty stand off, and then GG and Fluff disappeared down the stairs.

I told David to come witness this. With the door open, Sausage wanted to come in. No, we were not taking another kitten. The kitten was afraid of me, and figured out how to get down the stairs pretty fast, which did involve some tumbling. Sausage came in, checked on her other young one, wouldn't let it nurse and we put her back out.

I hated to see GG leave mad, and went looking for him. No where to be found. I did this three more times before going to bed and one time around 4am.

The first time I went GG hunting, when I came back there was Sausage curled up by the door with a kitten. We went through this again. Kitten tumbling down the stairs, and Sausage coming inside, we putting Sausage right back out.

Around dinner time, David and I pulled out the heavy couch and spent an hour trying to get the kitten out from under it. Finally captured, it struggled to get free. Strong little fellow. David reminded me to hold it by the nape of the neck. I did and returned it to Sausage who was sitting guard by the entrance of the building.
She seemed glad to have her baby back, but was really confused. I gave her some comfort and went back upstairs.

Later when I called for GG, I saw her laying on the sidewalk nursing her babies. Early this morning, I saw three playing. I think the fourth one died. It's very flattering and quite a compliment that she would want her babies to stay with us. We are barely equipped to handle GG let another a mom and three kittens.

GG finally came in this morning around 7. Not having dinner, he was starved and is currently zonked out on the coffee table.
