Pictures of the Israeli Squirrel

The Israeli Squirrel also known as the Squirrel of the Middle East is actually not indigenous to the area. These critters were brought over by the British during their empire hey-day and can be found throughout the entirety of the former empire. Unlike most squirrels the Israeli squirrel is carnivorous. The British sailors brought them to ports throughout the world for the purpose of keeping rat populations under control.

2 Israeli squirrels. As you can see some are long-haired, but most have short hair. They come in a variety of colors from white, black, gray, orange, and a combination of all.
Unfortunately the Israeli Squirrel has a real sense of entitlement and instead of hunting prefers to simply be fed. Some of these creatures have been known to harass total strangers walking along the sidewalk to give them food. Most Israeli Squirrels keep to themselves and seem to be afraid of humans, but some are quite friendly and will allow you to pick them up. They are quite territorial.

This female is quite the cutie, very friendly, and really likes raw chicken liver. Her territory is by the bus stop and she relies heavily on bus passengers to feed her. I named her Calico.

This guy is Patch. He seems friendly enough, but will swipe with sharp claws if you get too close. He along with his sister patrol the sidewalk between the apartment buildings.

This girl is Patch's sister. She constantly picks on her brother. She is a big fraidy-cat. I call her Masquerade, Mask for short. Mask and Patch are huge brats and bother me for food whenever I happen into their territory. As you can see, they are not starving.

The Israeli Squirrel does not mate for life, but these two seem to be in a long-term on again/off again relationship. Fluffy on left, Bag on the right. The pix are not in proportion, Bag is actually larger than Fluff.
Sometimes the Israeli Squirrels will follow you home and declare themselves a member of the family. We have been adopted twice by such a critter.

This guy came in and made himself at home.

He is one of the larger of the Israeli squirrel species.

Sometimes it gets cold in Israel, and he takes advantage of our soft warm blankets.

Unlike the brats, this guy has no fear of humans. His official name is Zombie, but for blog matters, I call him GG -- short for gentle giant (much easier to type). He used to be called Loudmouth because he meows so loud everyone in the apartment can hear him.
I hope this answers questions you may have about the Israeli Squirrel.
